It is said that there are more or less 300 people participating in the Kouhaku this year which will be held on the 31st of December. All singers aspire to go up on the stage of the NHK hall during the last day of the year, but the venue isn't what one could particularly call "huge." So how do the performers get around backstage?
This topic was featured in Wada's program Akko ni omakase! last December 1. There are apparently 7 dressing rooms at the NHK hall.
The 1st dressing room is used by the male host(s), which means that Arashi will be utilizing this again this year. The 2nd dressing room is allocated for the female host, which means this will go to Haruka Ayase. The 3rd dressing room is reserved for the most distinguished male singers such as Saburo Kitajima, Hiroshi Itsuki, and the like, while the 4th dressing room is reserved for the female singers such as Akiko Wada, Yoshimi Tendo, etc.

Sakiko Matsui of AKB48 revealed on a radio program that they "ran into MomoClo who just finished their set as AKB48 were on standby." It might be easier to imagine the dressing room situation while keeping in mind that these situations occur.
Akiko Wada also said: "There are toilets in the host's rooms, so when Arashi or Nakai host the program, I use theirs".

Isn't it because of the massive amount of AKB members? Why don't they just make their senbatsu members perform?

Maybe it's hard for her to go the the female host's dressing room since that changes every year. But this year it's Ayase, her kouhai in Hori-Pro so she can even linger there for a long time w

Akiko Wada almost never sings anymore, I really don't get why she gets to perform every single year. All it seems to me is that a power of darkness is behind all of this.

歌手活動はわりと地味にまじめにこなしてるよ
ちなみに今年の新曲は秋元康プロデュース - She comes out with a new song every year and she's also doing concerts every now and then. She's actually pretty diligent in pursuing her singing career.
- Oh, and her new song this year was produced by Yasushi Akimoto.

こいつがしょっちゅうトリと務めるはアホかと思うが、じゃあ代わりにだれをトリにするかと言っても今一ピンとこねーんだよな - Because the ratings aren't bad every year. Whatever everyone may say, she still has an air of glamour about her.
- I do think it's stupid that she gets to sing last year in, year out, but then who else would you put last? No one else really comes to mind.
